Актер кино и телевидения; творческую деятельность начинал в небольших гостиницах и ресторанах "борщкового пояса" ["borscht circuit", borscht belt] - курортного района в горах Катскилл [ Catskill Mountains]. В 1941 после премьеры мюзикла "Женщина в темноте" ["Lady in the Dark"] стал звездой Бродвея [ Broadway]. Сыграл в 17 фильмах, среди наиболее известных - "Тайная жизнь Уолтера Митти" ["The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"] (1947), где исполнил семь разнохарактерных ролей, "Ганс Христиан Андерсен" ["Hans Christian Andersen"] (1952), "Белое Рождество" ["White Christmas"] (1954) и др. Разносторонняя одаренность, пластичность, хорошие вокальные данные, склонность к гротескной клоунаде вывели его в число лучших комических актеров кино и эстрады. Кроме того, Д. Кей славился умением прекрасно общаться с детской аудиторией и после фильма об Андерсене он неоднократно выступал в роли знаменитого сказочника перед детьми разных стран как "посол по особым поручениям" Детского фонда ООН [UNICEF].
